Happy Friday Friends!
Ahhhh . . . usually that sentence brings so much joy.
But today not so much. It means that we are nearing the tail end of Christmas break, and while Christmas actually feels as though it were eons ago (just disregard the Christmas tree still standing in my family room), I am not so much ready to give up the break yet. And to make matters worse our plans for a fun family day have been derailed because Kyle is feeling under the weather. Poor kid – it stinks to feel lousy for the end of break.
But all good things must come to an end I suppose.
I know once we are back in a routine it will be a-ok. Kyle and I were just talking yesterday how the first day back after Christmas break is actually the worst day of the school year. At least on the first day of school (and it is well documented that I don’t care for that day very much either), there is some excitement for all the new things in store – getting to meet your teacher, see who is in your class[es], embarking on new subjects and activities. Plus the weather is still beautiful, Friday nights mean football games, fall is around the corner and Halloween and the holidays are in view.
But on the first day back after the New Year all those good things are behind us. We aren’t quite halfway through the school year yet so we can’t really start looking forward to last day of school. The weeks are broken up with only a few short breaks. And, at least here in western Pennsylvania we are embarking on the coldest, darkest and longest months of the year. (For those of you wondering, it is well-document that the 31 days in January and March are much longer than those in July and August – just ask anyone who lives here). It all just feels so blah!
However, I know that the anticipation of an event is often much worse than the event itself. Once we actually get through that first day back to school all will be fine. So there is no use worrying about it. Like it or not, Monday is going to roll around and we will back to business as usual.
Which actually brings me to the topic of today’s post. (I know – finally 😉). On Tuesday I shared my “19 for 2019” – a list of 19 things I want to accomplish in 2019 to make me a happier person. I wouldn’t really call these resolutions, or even goals, because some of them are straight up easy to do, but also easily lost in the shuffle of day to day life without someway to keep track of them. I find that writing things down, even simple things, makes it more likely that they will remain in my mind and that I will be able to cross them off the list at the end of the year.
The older I get, though, I realize it isn’t just the things we add to our lives that have the ability to make us happy; but, it’s also the things we subtract. So today I am sharing 19 things that I think we should do or have less of in 2019.
- Junk Food
- Clothes that Don’t Fit
- Comparison to Others
- People Pleasing
- Phone Time
- False Choices
- Unreasonable Expectations
- Unhealthy Relationships
- Negative Self-Talk
- H.S. Yearbooks
- Bad Habits
- Fad Diets
And now for the fun part . . . I want to to know what you think of this list.
Are you with me? Do you think eliminating (or at least reducing) things from our lives can lead to happiness? What didn’t I include, but should have? What would be on your list?
And which of these do you find intriguing and would you like to know more about? I’m going to pick eleven of these items and reflect a bit more on them throughout the year, probably on “Free For All Fridays” and I’d love your input on which ones to write about.
Speaking of “Free For All Fridays” . . . when I look back at my editorial calendar from last year my Fridays seemed to develop a rhythm as the months wore on. I am going to be much more intentional about that this year and as soon as I finalize my monthly plan I will share it with you, so you can know what to expect when.
I’ve also had some requests to talk more about meal planning and prepping, so I am going to devote some Tuesday posts to doing just that. Those days will usually still include a recipe, but it will be a simple or staple type dish that I rely on over and over again.
Finally, I am going to be cleaning up the site. I’m not planning a major overhaul (famous last words), but I am going to make the menu and search features better, and work on adding some new resources, and possibly even a Newsletter with unique content for subscribers.
Well, I think that’s enough to keep me busy. Thanks so much for being a faithful reader. I love getting the chance to connect with you!
